Resolved Question: Anything cool to do around Colorado Springs or Canon City?

I am going to fly from NC to Colorado springs and be driving to Canon city for the day. Its as far west as this southern boy has ever gone. I have seen mountains before(we have them here) but I figure I can see those on the drive. I am very much into history especially war history, are there any good museums? I am not into art,music or food. I only will have 1 day to be there which most of it I will be sitting in a tattoo parlor(yeah, those evil things rednecks get to show they are low class). I figure I will have 2-4 hours of time to drive around and do what I like, is there anything I should do while in CO that I really dont want to miss? What will the weather be like in mid september?
